MADHUBALA (MUMTAZ JAHAN BEGUM DEHLAVI) BIOGRAPHY (03/20/2013 01:02)
Madhubala Biography:
Mumtaz Jahan Dehlavi (14 February 1933 – 23 February 1969) better known by her screen name Madhubala was an Indian actress who appeared in Bollywood films. Her enduring screen fame derives from her appearances in film classics such as Mahal (1949), Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) and Mughal-e-Azam (1960). She was prolific from 1949 through to 1960 when illness abbreviated her career. With her contemporaries Nargis and Meena Kumari, she is widely regarded as one of the most influential and talented Hindi movie actresses.

In her short life, Madhubala appeared in over 70 films. In all three biographies and numerous articles published on her, she has been compared with Marilyn Monroe and has a similarly iconic position in Indian film history. Perhaps because she died before being relegated to supporting or character roles, to this day Madhubala remains one of the most enduring and celebrated legends of Indian cinema. This is in spite of a proportinally low percentage of successful films in her complete career span (15 box office hits out of some 70 releases). Her continuing appeal to film fans was underlined in a 1990 poll conducted by Movie magazine. Madhubala was voted the most popular vintage Hindi actress of all time, garnering 58% of the votes, and out ranking contemporary legendary actresses Meena Kumari, Nargis, and Nutan. More recently in Rediff.com's International Women's Day 2007 special, Madhubala was ranked second in their top ten list of "Bollywood's best actresses ever".[16]

In 2004 a digitally colorized version of Mughal-e-Azam was released and, 35 years after her death, the film and Madhubala became a success with cinema audiences all over again.

In the past decade, several biographies and magazine articles have been issued on Madhubala, revealing previously unknown details of her private life and career. Consequently in 2007, a Hindi film Khoya Khoya Chand was produced starring Shiney Ahuja and Soha Ali Khan - the plot included some events loosely based on the life of Madhubala and other vintage film personalities.

In 2008 a commemorative postage stamp featuring Madhubala was issued. The stamp was produced by India Post in a limited edition presentation pack which featured images of the actress. It was launched by veteran actors Nimmi and Manoj Kumar in a glittering ceremony attended by colleagues, friends and surviving members of Madhubala's family. The only other Indian film actress to be honoured in this manner is Nargis Dutt.

Personal Life :

Madhubala was born as Mumtaz Jahan Begum Dehlavi in New Delhi, India on 14 February 1933 to a Muslim couple of Pashtun (Pathan) descent. The family were based in Delhi. She was the fifth child among eleven children. According to her sister Madhur Bhushan, she was reportedly born a blue baby which would later have implications on her health.

After Madhubala's father, Ataullah Khan, lost his job at the Imperial Tobacco Company in Delhi,he relocated his family to Mumbai where they faced many hardships including the deaths of her three sisters and two brothers at the ages five and six. With his six remaining daughters to provide for, Ataullah Khan and young Mumtaz began to pay frequent visits to the Bombay Studios looking for work. This was how Mumtaz entered the movie industry at the age of nine in order to provide financial help for her family.
Madhubala was found to have a heart problem after she coughed up blood in 1950. She was discovered to have been born with a ventricular septal defect, commonly known as a "hole in the heart". At the time, the facility of a heart surgery was not widely available in India.

Madhubala hid her illness from the film industry for many years, but this one incident was widely reported by the media in the year 1954: While she was filming in Madras for S. S. Vasan's Bahut Din Huwe, she vomited blood on the set. Vasan and his wife took care of her until she was well again. She continued to work and established herself as an A-grade star.

Madhubala's family was extremely protective of her because of her health problem. While filming at the studios, she would eat only home-prepared food and drink water only from a specific well in order to minimize risks of infection. Eventually her condition would take its toll and abbreviate her career and life. However, for most of the 1950s, Madhubala performed successfully despite her illness.

Marragie and controversies:

Madhubala is said to have had several relationships according to a biography on the actress by journalist Mohan Deep. Her most public relationship was with actor Dilip Kumar.

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala first met on the sets of Jwar Bhata (1944), and worked together again in the film Har Singaar (1949) which was shelved. Their relationship began two years later during the filming of, Tarana (1951). They also became a popular romantic screen team appearing in a total of four films together. Actor Shammi Kapoor, in a recorded interview, narrated how Dilip Kumar used to meet Madhubala by arriving late on the sets of the film Shammi and Madhubala were doing together. He would enter Kapoor's room, knock on the door between his and Madhubala's room and spend nights with her.

Madhubala was known for never making public appearances, (with the exception of the premiere for the film Bahut Din Huwe in 1954) and she rarely gave interviews. Tabloids often speculated over her personal life and romantic liaisons and Dilip Kumar was repeatedly mentioned. These rumours were confirmed with a bold and rare public appearance during their courtship in 1955. Madhubala was escorted by Dilip Kumar hand in hand for the premier of his film Insaniyat (1955), a film with which she had no other association. Though this may have been another gesture of gratitude to the producer and director S. S. Vasan, who had cared for her earlier when she had taken ill during the filming of Bahut Din Huwe (1954), this appearance was significant for another reason. By attending the premiere officially escorted by Dilip Kumar, they publicly acknowledged their relationship.

Madhubala's romance with Kumar lasted for five years, between 1951 and 1956. Their association was ended following a controversial court case. B.R. Chopra, the director of the film Madhubala and Dilip Kumar were currently starring in, Naya Daur (1957), wanted the unit to travel to Bhopal for an extended outdoor shooting. Ataullah Khan objected and even claimed that the entire Bhopal schedule was a ruse to give Dilip Kumar the opportunity to romance his daughter. Finally, Chopra sued Madhubala for the cash advance she received from him for a film she now had no intention of completing. He also replaced her with South Indian actress Vyjayanthimala. Madhubala supported her father despite her commitment to Dilip Kumar. Kumar testified against Madhubala and Ataullah Khan in favor of the director B.R. Chopra in court. Madhubala and her father lost the case amid much negative publicity. Up until that point Madhubala had worked hard to gain a reputation as a reliable and professional performer with much good will in the industry. Her image was badly damaged after this episode. Madhubala and Dilip Kumar were effectively separated from that point on.

In an interview her sister Madhur Bhushan described the events as:

The reason Madhubala broke up with Dilip Kumar was B R Chopra's film Naya Daur, not my father. Madhubala had shot a part of the film when the makers decided to go for an outdoor shoot to Gwalior. The place was known for dacoits, so my father asked them to change the location. They disagreed because they wanted a hilly terrain. So my father asked her to quit the film. He was ready to pay the deficit. Chopra asked Dilip Kumar for help. Dilipsaab and Madhubala were engaged then. Dilipsaab tried to mediate but Madhubala refused to disobey her father. Chopra's production filed a case against her, which went on for a year. But this did not spoil their relationship. Dilipsaab told her to forget movies and get married to him. She said she would marry him, provided he apologised to her father. He refused, so Madhubala left him. That one 'sorry' could have changed her life. She loved Dilipsaab till the day she died.

She met her husband, actor and playback singer, Kishore Kumar during the filming of Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958). At the time he was married to the Bengali singer and actress Ruma Guha Thakurta . After his divorce, because Kishore Kumar was Hindu and Madhubala Muslim, they had a civil wedding ceremony in 1960. His parents refused to attend. The couple also had a Hindu ceremony to please Kumar's parents, but Madhubala was never truly accepted as his wife. Within a month of her wedding she moved back to her bungalow in Bandra because of tension in the Kumar household. They remained married but under great strain for the remainder of Madhubala's life.

Madhubala's love-life was constantly speculated on in media. She is said to have been romantically involved with Director Kidar Sharma, Kamal Amrohi, Actor Premnath and Pakistani politician Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto at different points of her career. B. K. Karanjia, former Filmfare editor and a close friend of both Madhubala and her father Ataullah Khan, has denied this saying , "Yes, there were so many in love with her, she used to play one against the other. But it was out of innocence rather than shrewd calculation. Madhubala was a child at heart."

Last Days Of Death:

In 1960, Madhubala sought treatment in London as her condition deteriorated. Complicated heart surgery was in its infancy and offered her some hope of a cure. After an examination the doctors there refused to operate, convinced her chances of surviving the procedure were minimal.Their advice was that she should rest and avoid overexertion, and predicted that she could live for another year. Knowing her death was imminent, Madhubala returned to India, but defied the predictions by living for another 9 years.

In 1966, with a slight improvement in her health, Madhubala tried working again opposite Raj Kapoor in the film Chalak. Film media heralded her "comeback" with much fanfare and publicity. Stills from this time showed a still beautiful but pale and wan-looking Madhubala. However, within a few days of filming, her frail health caused her to collapse and the film remained incomplete and unreleased.

When acting was clearly no longer an option, Madhubala turned her attention to film making. In 1969 she was set to make her directorial debut with a film named Farz aur Ishq. However the film was never made, as during the pre production stages, Madhubala finally succumbed to her illness and died on 23 February 1969, shortly after her 36th birthday. She was buried at Santa Cruz cemetery with her diary by her family and husband Kishore Kumar. Madhubala's tomb at the Juhu/Santa Cruz Muslim cemetery was carved in pure marble and aayats from the Quran as well as verses dedicated to her. In a controversial move, her tomb was demolished in 2010 to make space for new graves

Film Career:
Mumtaz’s first movie Basant (1942) was a box-office success. She played the character of the daughter of the popular actress Mumtaz Shanti. She further went on to act in several movies as a child artist. Actress Devika Rani was impressed by her performances and potential and advised her to assume the name Madhubala, which meant "a woman of honey". Madhubala soon garnered reputation as a reliable professional performer. By the time she entered adolescence, she was being groomed for lead roles.

Her first break came when producer Kidar Sharma cast her opposite Raj Kapoor in Neel Kamal (1947). She was fourteen when she was given the lead role in the movie. The film was not a commercial success, but her performance was well received. This was also the last film in which she was credited as Mumtaz before assuming her screen name Madhubala.

During the next two years, she blossomed into a captivating beauty. However it was not until she was cast in the coveted female lead role in Bombay Talkies prestigious and anticipated production Mahal in (1949), (a role intended for super star Suraiya) that Madhubala attained immense popularity. Madhubala alongside many established actresses screen tested for the role before she was finally groomed and selected by the director Kamal Amrohi. Upon the film's release, audiences and critics alike enthused over the new star's enigmatic beauty and screen presence. Though she was only 16 at the time, her subtle and skillful performance was widely acknowledged to have upstaged her seasoned co-star Ashok Kumar. The film was the third biggest hit at the box office in 1949 and the song Aayega Aanewala heralded the arrival of two new superstars: Madhubala and playback singer Lata Mangeshkar.

She consolidated the emphatic success of Mahal with subsequent box office hits like Dulari (1949), Beqasoor (1950), Tarana (1951) and Badal (1951). These successful films placed her among the most bankable and prolific actresses of the early (1950's) alongside established contemporaries Kamini Kaushal, Suraiya and Nargis.

It was the film Mughal-e-Azam that marked what many consider to be her greatest and definitive characterization as the doomed courtesan Anarkali. Director K. Asif, unaware of the extent of Madhubala's illness, required long and grueling shooting schedules that made heavy physical demands on her, whether it was posing as a veiled statue in suffocating make-up for hours under the sweltering studio lights or being shackled with heavy chains. From 1951 through to 1959 Madhubala invested her best efforts into Mughal-e-Azam. Post 1956 and her separation from Dilip Kumar, the film's remaining intimate romantic scenes were filmed under much tension and strain between Madhubala and her now estranged co-star. This emotionally and physically taxing experience is widely perceived as a major factor in her subsequent decline in health and premature death.

On 5 August 1960, Mughal-e-Azam released and became the biggest grossing film at that time, a record that went unbroken for 15 years until the release of the film Sholay in 1975. It still ranks second in the list of all time box-office hits of Indian cinema (inflation adjusted). Despite performing alongside the most respected acting talent of the industry, Prithviraj Kapoor, Durga Khote, and Dilip Kumar, critics recognised and appreciated Madhubala's intelligent and multi layered performance. She received some recognition as a serious actress when she was nominated for a Filmfare Award. However she did not win, losing out to Bina Rai for her performance in the film Ghunghat (1960). In Khatija Akbar's biography on Madhubala (see reference section), Dilip Kumar paid tribute to her talent: "Had she lived, and had she selected her films with more care, she would have been far superior to her contemporaries. Apart from being an excellent artiste and very versatile, she had a cheerful nature. God had gifted her with so many things..."

In 1960, Madhubala hit the peak of her career and popularity with the release of back-to-back blockbusters Mughal-e-Azam and Barsaat Ki Raat. She was offered strong, author-backed roles, but her deteriorating health did not permit her to enjoy this period and develop as an actress. At this point Madhubala became so ill that she could not accept any new films or even complete her existing assignments. In the biography by khatija Akbar, her frequent co-star Dev Anand recalled: "She was very robust, full of life and energy. One could never conceive that she was ill. She enjoyed her work, she was always laughing. Then out of the Blue, one day she had disappeared...".

She did have intermittent releases in the early 1960s. Some of these, like Jhumroo (1961), Half Ticket (1962) and Sharabi (1964), even performed above average at the box-office. However, most of her other films issued in this period were marred by her absence in later portions when her illness prevented her from completing them. They suffer from compromised editing and in some cases the use of "doubles" in an attempt to patch in scenes that Madhubala was unable to shoot. Her last released film Jwala, although filmed in the late 1950s, was not issued until 1971, two years after her death. Incidentally, apart from some Technicolor sequences in Mughal-e-Azam, Jwala is the only time Madhubala appeared in a colour film.

Madhubala had many successful films following Mahal. With pressure to secure herself and her family financially, she acted in as many as twenty-four films in the first four years of her adult career. Consequently, critics of the time commented that Madhubala's beauty was greater than her acting ability. This was in part due to careless choices in film roles. As sole support of her family, she accepted work in any film, causing her credibility as a dramatic actress to be seriously compromised. Something she later expressed regret over. "She was ecstatically, exasperatingly beautiful", exclaimed contemporary actress Nadira. "She created a kind of reverence, she had such an aura about her."

She did have aspirations to appear in more prestigious films with challenging roles. Bimal Roy's Biraj Bahu (1954) being a case in point. Madhubala having read the novel, was desperate to secure the lead in the film adaptation. Assuming she would command her market price (one of the highest), Bimal Roy passed her over in favour of a then, struggling Kamini Kaushal. When Madhubala learned that this was a factor in her losing the part, she lamented the fact that she would have performed in the film for a fee of one rupee. Such was her desire to improve her image as a serious actress.

As a star, Madhubala did ascend to the top of the industry. Her co-stars at the time were the most popular of the period: Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Rehman, Pradeep Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Dev Anand. Madhubala also appeared alongside many notable leading ladies of the time including Kamini Kaushal, Suraiya, Geeta Bali, Nalini Jaywant, Shyama and Nimmi. The directors she worked with were amongst the most prolific and respected: Mehboob Khan (Amar), Guru Dutt (Mr. & Mrs. '55), Kamal Amrohi (Mahal) and K. Asif (Mughal-e-Azam) . She also ventured into production and made the film Naata (1955) which she also acted in.

During the 1950s, Madhubala proved herself a versatile performer in starring roles, in almost every genre of film being made at the time. Her 1950 film Hanste Aansoo was the first ever Hindi film to get an "A" (Adults Only) rating from the Central Board of Film Certification.[10] She was the archetypal lady fair in the popular swashbuckler, Badal (1951) and was next seen as an uninhibited village belle in Tarana (1951). She was convincing as the traditional ideal of Indian womanhood in Sangdil (1952) and was well received in a comic performance as the spoilt heiress, Anita in Guru Dutt's classic satire Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955). In 1956 she had success in historical costume dramas such as Shirin-Farhad and Raj-Hath. Equally successful in contemporary characterizations, she was memorable in a double role in the social film Kal Hamara Hai (1959). Madhubala played the cigarette smoking dancer Bella, and her more conventional saintly sister Madhu.

Suddenly in the mid-1950s her films, even major ones like Mehboob Khan's Amar (1954), fared so badly commercially that she was labelled "Box Office Poison". She turned her career around in 1958, with a string of hit films: Howrah Bridge opposite Ashok Kumar featured Madhubala in the unusual role of an Anglo-Indian Cabaret singer, embroiled in Calcutta's Chinatown underworld. She made a big impact with a daring (for the time) Westernized image, with her cascading locks, deep cut blouses, fitted Capri pants and tailored Chinese dresses. Madhubala's sensuous torch song from the film, Aaiye Meherebaan, dubbed by Asha Bhosle, was a popular hit with audiences, and is widely quoted and celebrated to this day. Howrah Bridge was followed by Phagun opposite Bharat Bhushan, Kala Pani opposite Dev Anand, the perennial hit Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi opposite her would-be-husband, Kishore Kumar and Barsaat Ki Raat (1960), opposite Bharat Bhushan again.

It is of note that of the 70 plus films Madhubala made in her career, only a relatively small number, 15, were successful at the box office from 1947 through to 1964. Despite this fact she remained in demand as an actress with producers and directors largely due to her star power and unprecedented popularity with the general movie going public. Frequent co-star Dilip Kumar recalled: "She was extremely popular, and I think, the only star for whom people thronged outside the gates. Very often when shooting was over, there'd be a vast crowd standing at the gates just to have a look at Madhu...It wasn't so for anyone else."

In 1960, she consolidated previous successes, and her super-star status when she went on to appear in the epic mega-budget historical, Mughal-e-Azam. This film is widely perceived to be the crowning glory of her career and perhaps the decade of filmmaking in India.

WAHEEDA REHMAN BIOGRAPHY (03/16/2013 12:44)
 Waheeda Rehman Biography:
Waheeda Rehman is an Indian film actress who appears in Bollywood movies and is known for many successful and critically acclaimed movies from the 1950s, 60s and early 70s most notably C.I.D. (1956) and 5 Guru Dutt classics - Pyaasa (1957), 12 O'Clock (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1961). Her other notable works include Solva Saal (1958), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962), Kohra (1964), Guide (1965), Teesri Kasam, Mujhe Jeene Do (1966), Neel Kamal and Khamoshi (1969).

Early Life :
One of the most prominent actresses of the golden era, Waheeda Rehman was born into a traditional Tamil, speaking Muslim family in Melapalayam, Thirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, British India. She and her sister learnt Bharatnatyam at Mumbai's Sri Rajarajeswari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir, where Guru T. K. Mahalingam Pillai, doyen among nattuvanars taught and performed on stage together. Her father, who was a district commissioner, died while she was in her teens.
It is a common misconception that Rehman was born in Hyderabad.“It’s a long story,” she says, “When I was in Chennai, I did two Tamil and four Telugu movies. In the first one, Kaalam Maari Pochu along with Gemini Ganesan a bilingual film which was made in Tamil and Telugu as Rojulu Maraayi, I did only a folk dance number in both Tamil and Telugu versions. However, it went on to become a hit! I was in Hyderabad celebrating its success and Guru Dutt happened to be there. He was on a lookout for new faces and heard that I could speak in Urdu. It is because he spotted me in Hyderabad that people assume I was born there.”
Her dream was to become a doctor but, due to circumstances and illness, she abandoned this goal. Instead helped by her supportive parents, she hit the silver screen with Telugu films Jayasimha (1955), followed by Rojulu Marayi (1955) and Tamil film Kaalam Maari Pochu (1956). It is in Vijaya-Suresh's Ram aur Shyam (a remake of Telugu movie Ramudu Bheemudu) in 1967 that Waheeda acted again under the direction of the topnotch Telugu director Tapi Chanakya who incidentally directed her movies Rojulu Maaraayi in Telugu (1955) and Kaalam Maaripochu in Tamil (1956).

Film Career:

Waheeda Rehman, started her career in films in 1954 and her first successful films were the Telugu films Jayasimha (1955), Rojulu Marayi (1955) and Tamil film Kaalam Maari Pochu (1956).

In the success party of Rojulu Maaraayi, Guru Dutt noticed her and decided to groom her and have her act in Hindi films. Waheeda considered Guru Dutt as her mentor. Dutt brought her to Bombay (now Mumbai) and cast as a vamp in his production C.I.D. (1956), directed by Raj Khosla. A few years after joining the Hindi film industry, she lost her mother. After the success of C.I.D., Dutt gave her a leading role in Pyaasa (1957). Their next venture together, Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), depicted the story of a successful director's decline after he falls for his leading lady. Dutt's existing marriage and her film successes with other directors caused them to drift apart personally and professionally, although they continued to work together into the 1960s (Chaudhvin Ka Chand). She completed Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) under some strain. They broke away from each other after its indifferent reception at the Berlin Film Festival in 1963. Soon afterward, Guru Dutt died on 10 October 1964 in Mumbai reportedly from an overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol.

Waheeda Rehman established a great working relationship with Dev Anand, and together as a pair had number of successful films to their credit. The box office hits of the pair include C.I.D. (1956), Solva Saal (1958), Kala Bazar (1960), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962) and Guide (1965); box office duds were Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1961) and Prem Pujari (1970). She reached her peak with Guide (1965) and was much in demand. Rehman was cast as "Gulabi" in Satyajit Ray's Bengali film Abhijan in 1962. She worked in comedy film Girl Friend in 1960 with Kishore Kumar. She was offered lead actress's role in films even opposite actors junior to her by experience like Dharmendra, but they flopped. But she continued to taste success in the late sixties when she was paired with well established stars. She delivered hits opposite Dilip Kumarin three successive years; " Dil diyaa Dard liyaa" in 1966, Ram Aur Shyam in 1967 and Aadmi in 1968 and some box office duds but critically acclaimed films with Rajendra Kumar - Palki, Dharti and Shatranj ; two films opposite Raj Kapur - " Ek dil sau Afsane" and the acclaimed "Teesri Kasam" which was the debut film of Basu Bhattacharyya; a few films opposite Biswajeet like, "Bees saal baad" and "Kohra"; this helped her continue to get lead roles in the early seventies. Her career's biggest hit Khamoshi came in 1970, opposite Rajesh Khanna.

Her career continued throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her roles in Guide (1965), where she hit the peak of her career, and Neel Kamal (1968), but despite excellent offbeat roles in subsequent films, including a National Award winning performance in Reshma Aur Shera (1971), some of the films failed at the box office. Seeing her films being successful, Waheeda decided to experiment with roles at this stage of career. She accepted Reshma Aur Shera, opposite her old co-star Sunil Dutt, with whom she had previously in the sixties had hits like Ek Phool Char Kaante, Mujhe Jeene Do, Meri Bhabhi and Darpan. Her performance was appreciated by critics, but the film failed at the box office. But Waheeda continued to experiment with roles and accepted the offer to play a mother to Jaya Bhaduri in Phagun(1973). This she regards the mistake of her career as after this film flopped suddenly people started offering her motherly roles to heroes.

From the mid seventies, Waheeda's career as lead heroine ended and her career as character actor began. At around this time, Kamaljit, who starred opposite her in Shagun (1964), proposed and they got married in 1974. After her appearance in Lamhe (1991), she retired from the film industry for 12 years.

In her new innings from seventies her successful films, where she played pivotal roles include, Kabhi Kabhie (1976),Trishul (1978), Jwalamukhi(1980), Namkeen and Namak Halaal (1982),Mashaal (1984), Chandni(1989), Rang De Basanti(2006). She played the central character in a Mahesh Bhatt directed tele-film "Swayam" that starred Akash Khurana and Anupam Kher. She also appeared in a tele-series being directed by Gulzar. In recent years she made a comeback playing elderly mother and grandmother roles in Om Jai Jagadish (2002), Water (2005) and Rang De Basanti (2006), 15, Park Avenue and Delhi 6 (2009) which were all critically acclaimed.

In October 2004, a Waheeda Rehman film retrospective was held at the Seattle Art Museum and the University of Washington where Waheeda participated in spirited panel and audience discussions on her most memorable films—Pyaasa, Teesri Kasam and Guide—although her most successful film is still considered to be Khamoshi, with costar Rajesh Khanna.

Marriage Life:

After her marriage with Shashi Rekhi (screen name Kamaljeet) on 27 April 1974, she shifted to a farmhouse in Bangalore. She bore two children named Sohail and Kashvi, who are writers. On 21 November 2000, her husband died following a prolonged illness. She moved back to her ocean view bungalow in Bandra, Mumbai where she currently lives.

Neil Nitin Mukesh and Sonal Chauhan New Bollywood Film 3G Movie Review:

Neil Nitin Mukesh sees dead people. Whether dead people see him back is not known at the end of this chilling serial, which starts off as a comment on the perils of intricately-manufactured cellphones and ends with a slap-in-the-face comment on the porn industry that, we are told, threatens to destroy the very foundation of our societal structure. It certainly creates havoc in two lives out to have a fun week in azure Fiji. Here's how.

Story:

Sheena (Sonal Chauhan), no... not the Jungle Queen, is vacationing in Fiji and expecting the love of her life Sam (Neil Nitin Mukesh) to come join her. He turns her down first and while she is sadly swimming in the picturesque beach of Fiji, sipping mocktails and sun bathing in tiny-winy bikini, sadly let me remind you, he makes a hero-ish entry in a fancy motorboat. Insipid romantic songs, some make out sessions, some of the many kisses and smooches follow and literally after 30 minutes of gruesome torture, the film starts. Having lost his mobile phone, Sam goes to a local store and buys a second hand 3G enabled cell phone. All hell breaks loose as Sam gets trapped in a maze set out by a spirit who keeps video-calling him at nights courtesy his 3G facility. How the spirit scares him, possesses him, keeps calling him, pleads him to solve her case is what follows through the rest of the plot.

Artists Performances:

Neil has worked hard on conveying a sense of growing anxiety within his character's devilish domain. His performance gets its pat-on-the-back moment when in a moment of satanic exhilaration he raises both his hands triumphantly in the air to mock a priest saying, "Have you forgiven yourself?"His co-star has relatively less to do, and wear. Sonal does both with enthusiasm, and provides Neil's character with a spooky counterpoint in the tale of the man, woman and the entity that enters their lives. The film depends almost completely on the couple to carry the chilling tale forward. The incidental characters are almost non-existent until the endgame when the story of another couple emerges from the folds of the inexplicable goings-on.

Technical and Other Departments:

Music by Mithoon and Amar Mohile is highly wannabe and only acts as a deterrent in the goings on. If there's one aspect of this film that deserves ample appreciation, it's the cinematography. The camera work is splendid, especially in capturing the picturesque virgin locations.

Movie Analysis:

The film 3G makes interesting use of the traditional horror formula. It subverts the genre to poke sardonic scary fun at technological advancement and the stronghold of gadgets and gizmos in today's times. There's a frightening message here on how the past revisits our present when we aren't looking.Eerie and spine-tingling in spurts, 3G has its moments of gripping suspense. Those who have enjoyed Ram Gopal Varma's Bhoot or Vikram Bhatt's Raaz would certainly derive a trembling pleasure in 3G.A shiver-giver set in the shimmering waters of Fiji, this is a well-structured though unevenly paced scare-fest that leads us into a terrifying climax. Porn intended.

Final View:

3G is utterly disappointing for a horror film. Watch it only if you are in a large group of friends and are looking for unintentional humou

Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani New Bollywood Film Jolly LLB Movie Review:

Court room drama has always been a means to make for a dramatic penultimate moment in Hindi films until now. Subhash Kapoor, maker of the critically acclaimed Phas Gaye Re Obama gives court room drama the center stage with his latest satire Jolly LLB. Whether this lighthearted take on the conditions of judicial system and lawyers makes for an enjoyable watch or not, let's find out.

Story:
Jolly LLB follows the life of Jagdish Tyagi aka Jolly LLB (Arshad Warsi) a small time lawyer from Meerut. Struggling to make a mark, Jolly leaves his and his love interest Sandhya (Amrita Rao) back in hometown and he moves to the capital Delhi to make it big. But things aren't as rosy or easy as he had thought. In a tearing rush to earn some fame and money, he forces himself into a case by filing a PIL that pits him against one of the biggest and most influential lawyers in the country, Tejinder Rajpal (Boman Irani). How Jolly manages to fight against the devil's advocate who saves his client even after him having mowed down six innocent people on the footpath is what follows through the rest of the plot

Artists Perfromances:

Performances of the lead actors (Boman Irani, Arshad Warsi and Saurabh Shukla) can be described in only two words - Simply outstanding! Arshad has shown time and again in the past that he can act very well. This time, he ascertains himself as a performer and proves that he can do a great job even in handling dramatic scenes. Boman Irani once again proves his credentials and proves he can carry a film firmly on his shoulders alone. Amrita Rao has nothing much to do, but still does a decent job of the role offered to her. Saurabh Shukla is incredible and is the show stealer in many scenes. All other actors, especially Manoj Pahwa, have done a great job.

Technical and Other Departments:

Even the backdrop is brilliantly captured. Subhash Kapoor keeps the world of judiciary as realistic as possible. The inner sights of the courts, the characterisation of the lawyers, their desperation to bag cases and even the plight of the judges are very realistically depicted without the usual cinematic liberties many filmmakers resort to.
Music by Krsna is uninspiring and totally cacophonous. Even the background score is unimpressive. Screenplay is good.

Movie Analysis:

Filmmaker Subhash Kapoor is known for simplistically passing serious messages. He uses satire as a strong tool to convey his point. Even in his critically acclaimed film Phas Gaye Re Obama his approach was similar. With Jolly LLB, he tries to point out the pitiful conditions of Indian Law System and gives uses a very lighthearted approach. However, his treatment this time around fails to please.

It's a different thing taking one's own time to establish the plot and the backdrop and it's totally different to be indulging in unnecessary scenes to make a film more commercial. Subhash Kapoor tries to insert too many commercial elements in the film thus making it a cumbersome watch. The first half unnecessarily has a romantic inclination of the lead protagonist also with the insertions of romantic songs etc. The entire track of Sandhya is basically needless in the otherwise interesting film and in turn causes much of the annoyance.

Subhash also uses ample melodrama in the film to conveniently draw conclusions. The climax especially showcases Subhash clearly resorting to cliched emotional means for dramatic effect.

Final View:

Overall, Jolly LLB could've been a riotous watch on a serious issue with ample scope for sardonic and witty takes; however, it ends up becoming melodramatic and cliched.

Manchu Lakshmi New Film Gundello Movie Review:

Lakshmi Manchu's latest production Gundello Godari is one of highly-talked about and most-awaited Telugu movies. It was to release in November 2013, but due to unavailability of enough number of theatres, the movie had to be delayed. Its promos have soared up the viewers' curiosity to sky high. The long wait is worth as the film will satisfy you.

Story:

An ill-fated couple's - Malli (Aadi) and Chitra (Lakshmi Prasanna) - wedding turns into nightmare as floods submerge their village. They lose all hope but fight to survive. Before death parts them, Malli tells Chitra about the girl who came to their wedding and presented him a gift. Malli (Aadi) is a fisherman and his only dream is to own a boat. He works for a merchant whose teenage daughter (Tapsee) is fascinated by his masculine looks and forces him to love her. That makes his life miserable. Chitra too narrates her own story to her hubby that she was an orphan raised by an aunty. She loves the aunty's son Soori (Sandeep Kishan). They are poor and her employer (Ravi Babu) and a doctor tries to take her miserable condition. How Malli and Chitra get married? Would they survive the devastating floods?

Artists Performances:

Adi Pinisetti is raw and fabulous with his spotless portrayal of a fisherman character. His experience in Tamil films has come in handy in portraying raw emotions and he has maintained rustic look throughout. Lakshmi Manchu is good a girl who is in an emotional turmoil. There will be a lot of sympathy to this character. Sundeep Kishan suited the role very well and his dialect is good. Tapsee is the eye candy of the film with sensuous look and lusty characterization. She looks really good in sarees. Ravi Babu has a brief and effective role. Jeeva, Annapurna and Pruthvi did well. Mumaith Khan has sizzled in an item song.

Technical And Other Departments:

Kumar Nagendra has chosen and wonderful story and he has got good grip on the tempo. The director manages to run the show without boring you. Ilayaraja's music is the main highlight in the technical front. All his compositions are soothing and melodious and surely add to the narration of the story. His background helps the director to elevate the intensity and emotional sequences.
MR Palanikumaar's picturisation is another attraction in the movie. Especially, he has done brilliant work in flood and romantic scenes. Gundello Godari has huge amount CGI work, which is also a highlight. Especially, the visual in the climax sequences will surely leave you spell bound. Another aspect to be commended is its art direction.

Movie Analysis:

Gundello Godari is a love story that is set against the backdrop of 1986 floods of Godavari. It’s a movie with raw emotions and realistic content. It’s very easy to produce and market an eye-candy films with entertainment quotient. But Lakshmi Manchu has taken a brave decision of making a different movie without compromising on any aspect. Plus points of the film are casting, realistic approach, music and technical elements. On the flip side, the second half should have been more arresting. On a whole, Gundello Godari is a brave and sensible effort from Lakshmi Manchu.

Final View:

Gundello Godari, sure does, goes off the beaten track. Like the river Godari, it looks beautiful but unlike the river, this movie lacks depth. An interesting romantic track in the first part of movie, good cinematography, and Tapsee's charm are submerged by the lethargic second half. Yet, watch it for the commendable effort.

Dr. Rajashekar New Film Mahankali Movie Review:

Three years after the release of Maa Annayya Bangaram, Dr Rajasekhar, who is known as angry young man, has made a grand comeback with the Telugu movie Mahankali. The actor has already appeared in police getup in several movies but his role and performance in Ankusam (1990) has been the best so far. Many film goers were expecting his latest outing to be even better than Ankusam and it truly meets their expectations.

Story:

Mahankali (Rajasekhar) is a honest police officer, who hates corruption. In Hyderabad, many people die in a serial bomb blast. Mahankali is appointed as a special officer to investigate this case. Whether he succeed or not and How (Tanisha) Madhurima is releated to Mahankali should been seen on the silver screen.

Artists Performances:

As angry young man, Dr. Rajasekhar has already rocked viewers in his previous movies. Now, he is once again at it. As a police office, he has delivered superb performance in Mahankali. He surely impresses you in action and chase sequences. Actress Madhurima has less scope for performance, but she will impress you with her glamour.Others like Pradeep Rawat, Supreet, Vinodkumar, Annapurna and Saleem Panda have also delivered good performances.

Technical And Other Departments:

Director Jeevitha Rajasekhar has penned some good dialogues, which are very punching and sharp. Mahankali has good production values and S Chinna's music and background score are the main attraction in the technical front. A few of his compositions are very good to listen.
Wonderfully choreographed fights and chases are other good assets of Mahankali. The picturisation and editing are also commendable.

Movie Analysis:

Mahankali is an action entertainer with some commercial elements and Dr Rajasekhar's electrifying performance is the main attraction in the movie. S Chinna's music and background score, Jeevitha's interesting screenplay, wonderful picturisation, well-choreographed action and chase sequences are other highlights of the film.Director Jeevitha, the wife of Dr Rajasekhar, has chosen a tried and tested story, which has appeared many times on screen, but what makes her attempt different and unique is that she has thrown light on some of the current affairs. The story is about a powerful police officer, who will fight for the society. It deals with how a cop turns criminal, defies law and punishes the criminal.

Final View:

Overall, Mahankali is an average fare, which shows shades of several encounter Telugu movies in the past. If you are a die-hard fan of Rajasekhar watch it. Otherwise you can give it miss

Jimmy Shergill New Film Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Movie Review:

You don't expect anything but excellence from a man who has proven his brilliance film after film. After his much revered film on sports Paan Singh Tomar, Tigmanshu Dhulia comes up with the sequel to his 2011 gangster politico thriller Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. While the first part had gained ample recognition, the sequel promises to outdo the brilliance of the first. But does it succeed? Let's find out.

Story:

Well Coming into Story,Tigmanshu gets down to business from the very first minute of the film. Through the initial credit roll he gives you a fair recap of the first part. Aditya Pratap Singh (Jimmy Sheirgill), The Saheb, is crippled and is trying to recover from the physical disability and his wifes betrayal. The lover cum seductress Madhavi Devi (Mahie Gill), The Biwi, is now an MLA. Her relationship with Aditya may have broken to shambles but her relation with alcohol is deep, dark and daunting. Indarjeet Singh (Irrfan Khan), The Gangster, a ragged prince who has lost everything but his pride, pledges to get back his familys respect which was once destroyed by Adityas ancestors. Ranjana (Soha Ali Khan) is a modern ambitious girl who is madly in love with Indarjeet. The story takes a new turn when Aditya falls in love with Ranjana and forces Birendra (Raj Babbar) her father, for their marriage. What happens next follows through the rest of the Film.

Artists Performances:

Thanks to Tigmanshu having given equal footage to all the characters, each and every star have performed exceptionally well. Irrfan Khan stands out as he shows his anger, passion, jealousy and pride with utmost conviction. Jimmy pulls off his role with gusto and so does Mahie as the volatile, scheming wife and Raj Babbar. Soha Ali too stands out. Her character is more subtle and poised. Though Deepraj Rana's character is silent, he emotes very well and is able to convey a lot.

Technical And Other Departments:

Leaving the flaws aside, there isn't a thing that the filmmaker falters at. Right from the story to the acting, the backdrop to the backgound score, everything is top notch. The dialogues deserve a special mention too. Full marks to writer Tigmanshu for penning extremely witty and clever dialogues throughout the film.

Movie Analysis:

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns, directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia is truly a sequel considering that unlike other sequels, this one is a continuation of the original - Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. By introducing additional characters, the director ensures that there is more drama and romance in this one.Though the film is two and half hours long, it doesn't bore you at all as various scenes in the film keeps you engrossed in your seats. The characters are carefully etched showing traits of deception, sincerity and unpredictability. The best part of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns is that none of the character seems to overtake the other as all have been given equal importance. The humour is dark, witty and in absolute good taste. Background score by Sandeep Chowta stands out and adds to the feel of the film. Dialogues are penned by Tigmanshu Dhulia himself and are extremely impactful.

Well, here we must tell you that there are some sequences which is not in sync with the rest of the script and 'could have been easily avoided', but overall, you don't complain. Another thing....wonder if the director like all other filmmakers thought that an item number would add to the charm of the film because Mugdha Godse's item number was absolutely NOT required in a strong script such as this! While the first half of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns is extremely gripping, the second part is a little inconsistent.

Final View:

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returnshas the balls! Go watch it!

JOHN ABRAHAM NEW HINDI FILM SHOOTOUT AT WADALA MOVIE PREVIEW:

Shootout at Wadala is an upcoming Bollywood crime drama film written and directed by Sanjay Gupta. It is the prequel to 2007 film Shootout at Lokhandwala, and is based on the book Dongri to Dubai written by Hussain Zaidi. The film features John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut, Tusshar Kapoor and Sonu Sood in lead roles.

The film will dramatize the first-ever registered encounter by Mumbai police, where gangster Manya Surve was shot dead, which took place at the junction next to Dr. Ambedkar college, Wadala, Mumbai on 1 November 1982. The film is expected to release on May 1, 2013.

CONTROVERSY:

Director Sanjay Gupta knew the consequences of using Dawood Ibrahim's real name whilst filming the movie, however carried on with Sonu Sood being addressed as 'Daud Ibrahim' in the film. On 27th January 2013, Balaji Motion Pictures uploaded an new version of the theatrical trailer, and trimmed nearly every single dialogue from the film off. The character of Dawood Ibrahim is only seen for 3 seconds in the new trailer, in order to avoid any hassles. Only John Abraham's dialogues under the name of 'Manya Surve' is revealed in the trailer.
